New DelhiFurqan-ul-Haq, a local cricket player, and the host of a local tournament were both called in by the Jammu and Kashmir Police for interrogation after the former wore the Palestine flag on his helmet during a game.
The statement from the Jammu and Kashmir Police stated, "One cricket player and tournament organizer has been called for questioning by J&K Police regarding the use of the Palestine flag on his helmet during a cricket match at a private tournament in Jammu." Additionally, police officials were reported to have stated that they would attempt to determine the circumstances surrounding the cricket player's display of the Palestine flag during the game.
"A video that went viral on social media yesterday shows Furqan Ul Haq, a cricket player, playing at KC Door, Muthi, with a Palestine logo on his helmet. A 14-day preliminary inquiry under Section 173(3) BNSS has been started at PS Domana to ascertain the facts, intent, background of the individual, and any potential linkages due to the sensitive nature of the matter and its potential implications for public order, according to J&K Police.
The incident happened on Wednesday during the ongoing J&K Champions League cricket tournament between JK11 Kings and Jammu Trailblazers. The police were made aware of the situation after Furqan was seen wearing the helmet bearing the Palestine flag.
Police affirm that the current inquiry is restricted to interrogation.Officials have confirmed that the competition is privately run and unrelated to any national or international cricket organization. Even the police have insisted that only questioning is being done at this time and that no further action has been taken. Additionally, they will ascertain whether any permissions were obtained or whether any rules pertaining to the tournament were broken.
A senior official stated, "Police is verifying the facts and investigating the matter," adding that further action won't be taken until the questioning is finished and the purpose of the flag display is understood. Additionally, the authorities have advised people to hold off on making assumptions until the investigation is finished.
