New DelhiDuring the former Indian captain's playing career, Steve Bucknor controversially sent the legend out multiple times. In the 1990s and 2000s, Indian fans criticized Bucknor, a highly regarded West Indies umpire, for his infamous calls to dismiss Tendulkar even though he was not out.
In the meantime, Bucknor, the West Indies umpire, acknowledged that he had made mistakes when he disqualified the Indian legend in one of the most well-known incidents. Tendulkar was sent off LBW on three runs in the Brisbane Test during the Border-Gavaskar series in 2003β04.
Bucknor had ruled out the Indian star despite the ball going well over the stumps, and Tendulkar was unable to review it at the time due to the lack of reviews. The former skipper was shocked by the decision, but he walked back without challenging the call, as he had done numerous times.
Bucknor acknowledges his errors.Bucknor, the West Indies umpire, has acknowledged his errors in the meantime. In an interview with the West Indies Cricket Umpires' Association, Bucknor, who is currently 79, was quoted as saying, "Giving Sachin Tendulkar out leg before wicket, and it's a matter of knowing that it was a mistake, but until this day, every day, people talk about it." "What made me give him away? Was he out, etc.? However, mistakes are inevitable in life. Life goes on, and I've come to terms with the fact that it was an error," he continued.
The mistake was so serious that even Tony Greig, an on-air commentator, referred to it as a "dreadful decision." "That is a terrible choice. "Take a look at this, observe the movement and bounce," Greig had said.
What was the nature of the incident?Tendulkar had just come to bat in the first innings of the Brisbane Test when the flashpoint occurred. As the legend attempted to leave a back-of-a-length ball that darted into him, he was struck on his front pad on the front foot. After giving it some thought, Bucknor raised his finger in response to an appeal made by bowler Jason Gillespie and the other Australians.
As the Australians celebrated, Tendulkar was taken aback but walked back swiftly and amicably. The Indians felt defrauded as the replays showed that the ball was flying far over the stumps.

Two years later, in an India-Pakistan match, he declared Tendulkar out after an Abdul Razzaq ball had passed his bat without making contact. Bucknor was persuaded by the Pakistani team's feeble appeal.
Tendulkar on the contentious calls made by BucknorThe startlingly poor choices, meanwhile, have not impressed the Indian legend in the least. Tendulkar was asked to talk about Bucknor during a Reddit Ask Me Anything session last year. Tendulkar remarked, "Give him boxing gloves to wear when I am batting (so he can't raise his finger)."
