New DelhiYoung people are increasingly experiencing premature greying. Seeing schoolchildren or teenagers with noticeable grey hair is no longer uncommon. Dermatologists claim that the situation is much more complicated, despite the fact that genetics is frequently blamed.
According to renowned New Delhi dermatologist Dr. Jangid, there is a medical term for early greying. "We refer to it as canities in medical terminology. Hair turning gray before the age of 20 may occasionally be a sign of a pathological problem, he says. However, he continues, genetics only has a minor influence. The majority of the time, genetics is not the only factor. Although the precise cause is still unknown, some contributing factors have been identified by research.
Why does hair turn gray so quickly?
Nutritional deficiencies are frequently the cause, according to Dr. Jangid. Premature greying can be caused by a lack of important vitamins, insufficient protein consumption, and an unhealthy lifestyle in general. In an exclusive interview, Dr. Jangid states that "early greying usually does not occur if one maintains a balanced diet and follows a healthy routine."
He also makes a crucial distinction. Greying is typically regarded as non-pathological if it begins after the ages of 20 or 21. Even though it may still seem early to many, that is more in line with natural aging.
Is it possible for grey hair to turn black again?
It's interesting to note that not all early greying cases are irreversible. According to Dr. Jangid, "about 20 to 30 percent of people who experience early greying may see their hair regain its natural color later." When dietary and lifestyle issues are promptly addressed, this is especially feasible.
Expectations must be reasonable, though. "Greying cannot be completely reversed by treatment. It slows down the rate at which hair turns gray and helps stabilize the condition, he says.
Greying old hair as opposed to new grey hair
Dr. Jangid draws attention to a distinction that many people are not aware of. "There is a distinction between new hair growing out already grey and existing hair turning grey." Greying frequently starts at the root in younger people. "The root of the hair grows out grey, and the white portion increases over time, but the tip may remain black."
When should children begin to worry?
Greys should be taken seriously if they start well before the age of 20 and develop quickly. This could be related to some deficiencies, especially calcium pantothenate, according to Dr. Jangid. The process can be slowed down and, in certain situations, a partial improvement in hair color can result from early consultation, appropriate blood tests, and lifestyle modifications. Once the underlying cause is found, treating premature greying frequently gets easier.
