New DelhiAs of Wednesday, December 10, 2025, Australia is the first country to forbid children under sixteen from using social media. This includes Facebook and Instagram from Meta, YouTube from Alphabet, and TikTok.
The new rule mandated that ten of the biggest platforms restrict children beginning at midnight (1300 GMT on Tuesday) or face fines of up to A$49.5 million ($33 million). It was applauded by parents and child advocates but criticized by large digital corporations and proponents of free speech.
The prime minister, Anthony Albanese, called it "a proud day" for families and cited the legislation as proof that lawmakers can prevent online threats that have outgrown traditional safeguards.
Mr. Albanese told ABC News, "This is the day when Australian families are taking back power from these big tech companies."
"We need to make sure that humans are in control of our own destiny, and that is what this is about," he stated. "New technology can do wonderful things."
Why avoiding late-night scrolling improves sleep
Teens who avoid social media experience significant improvements in their sleep, self-esteem, friendships, and stress levels, according to Dr. Rahul Chandhok, Head Consultant-Mental Health & Behavioural Science, Artemis Hospitals. When they don't constantly check notifications or browse through their phones, their brains sleep better. Sleep is typically improved and less disturbed as a result.
How self-assurance increases as comparison culture declines
When they don't have to compare themselves to others online, a lot of teenagers also feel more self-assured. They evaluate themselves more by events that have occurred in real life than by photos that have been altered.
Why friendships formed offline grow stronger
Although friendships can change, they typically grow stronger. Teens converse more face-to-face when they aren't using the internet. They are able to communicate more effectively and have greater mutual trust as a result. These relationships may be less common, but they typically feel more significant and secure.
How stress levels decrease in the absence of continuous notifications
Additionally, stress levels may decrease. Social media constantly provides teens with new information, which raises expectations and causes them to worry about missing out. Eliminating this daily stress allows the mind to unwind and maintain focus on hobbies, education, and personal objectives.
Teens who don't use social media typically have better mental health, are more self-aware, and are more well-rounded. They make decisions that are ultimately better for their health and have a stronger connection to the real world.
