For the forthcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, England manager Thomas Tuchel has selected a 35-man team, giving players one last chance to make an impression before this summer's FIFA World Cup. The German manager made a number of intriguing selections, but the announcement was criticized for leaving out Real Madrid full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, a choice Tuchel called "tough."
Two uncapped players, Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele and Everton midfielder James Garner, are also called up for the first time. "I was very confident it was going to come just on the basis that I've had a good season, so I finally got my chance and it's a dream come true," said Garner, who has been a constant presence for Everton this season.
Steele, on the other hand, has not played in the Premier League this season but has been mentioned as a potential training goalkeeper for the World Cup team. Since competing for Great Britain in the 2012 Olympics, this is his first senior call-up.
Numerous returns, but the Chelsea pair is outA number of players are making their comebacks after protracted absences. Dominic Solanke is included for the first time since October 2024, and Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin will return to the team after more than five years. For the first time since October 2023, AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori is called up, along with Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo of Manchester United.
However, injuries prevent Trevoh Chalobah and Reece James of Chelsea from playing. Tuchel emphasized the management approach, pointing out that the camp is divided so that 11 players can join following the match against Uruguay. These players have played between 3,500 and 4,000 minutes. Some of these players have played more minutes than they did during the entire previous season, which is more significant than just the total number of minutes, he stated.
Tuchel talked about competition for other roles as well. In reference to the attack selection decisions made over Ollie Watkins, he stated, "I want to have a look at two other players to get a better picture and have a clearer opinion."
Notably, Uruguay and Japan will play England at Wembley on March 27 and 31, respectively. The deadline for submitting final World Cup squads is May 30.
