KolkataA former cricket player has offered his opinion on what might influence the Kolkata Knight Riders' 2026 success. He firmly pointed to the circumstances at their home field, Eden Gardens, and expressed his belief that the team has a clear advantage thanks to its spin resources—as long as the surfaces are adjusted appropriately.
PromotionDu Plessis talked about how important experienced spinners are and how Varun Chakravarthy could have a big impact on KKR's campaign if the conditions are right for them. He thought that not consistently bringing them into the game would take away one of the team's biggest advantages.
Ad"If I were in charge of the KKR team, I would tell the groundsman at Eden Gardens to make the wicket spin-friendly. KKR is lucky to have Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, who are both great players. Right now, they are two of the best T20 spinners in the world. Varun and Narine both need to be in the game. You lose those two cannons and your superpower if they play on surfaces where they aren't in contention. Yes, they can bowl well on any wicket and make it hard for batters. But Varun and Narine need to do well for KKR to do well this IPL. The pitch should be prepared keeping those two players in mind,” du Plessis said on JioHotstar’s Game Plan.
Concerns have been raised about KKR's home record from the previous season. Despite experimenting with pitch conditions, the team struggled to find consistency and only managed two victories at Eden Gardens. Before switching to more batting-friendly wickets, the slower tracks were initially employed, but the outcome did not materially improve.
Rahane is Lakshmipathy Balaji's first choice. The batting unit's balance might also be put to the test by a possible return to spin-heavy surfaces. A tactical conundrum could arise because players like Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, and Cameron Green are usually more at ease on true pitches.
Angkrish Raghuvanshi is a calm member of the team, but he may struggle in slower middle overs. To address this, former Indian bowler Lakshmipathy Balaji has suggested changing the batting order.
"KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane should bat in the top order, in my opinion. He should bat at number three at the very least. He has scored a lot of runs and performed incredibly well with CSK at number three. Therefore, it would be beneficial for him and KKR if he batted one down. At number four, Cameron Green is able to bat. This will allow him to calm down before pursuing the bowlers. Thus, a top four consisting of Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, Ajinkya Rahane, and Cameron Green will be the preferred option, he stated.
