Chennai:Ruturaj Gaikwad, the captain of the Chennai Super Kings, has confirmed the opening pair for the 2026 season. Last season, the 29-year-old dropped to number three to make room for Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra. Gaikwad confirmed that he would be opening this year with CSK's newest player, Sanju Samson, who was traded for and Sam Curran. If that's the case, Ayush Mhatre could be put at number three, and Urvil Patel could also be an interesting choice.
Ravichandran Ashwin, a former CSK cricketer, made it clear earlier that he wanted Gaikwad and Samson to bat first. He pointed out that both players can play aggressive cricket at the top, which can set the tone for the middle order batters.
"There is a pedigree with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson." To have pedigree means to make good runs and keep doing so for a while. We need to remember that. I would love to see both of them go all out in the opening slot. They both have their own strengths. One guy caresses the ball, and the other guy hits it hard, so both of those things are true. So I will look at it in that fashion that I have two good openers,β said Ashwin on his Youtube Channel.
What can CSK's middle order look like?It is likely that Dewald Brevis will bat fourth and Shivam Dube will bat fifth. They will have a hard time finishing games because CSK's lower middle order is still new to the game. But there is available. If the keeper-batter bats at number six, it could be good for the team because the veteran is great at finishing games. He hasn't played many balls in the tournament in the last few years, but he's been able to make the most of them.
He needs to back himself up again to help CSK make it to the playoffs. If he bats sixth, Prashant Veer could be put in at number seven. If not, Matt Short could be a good choice in the middle.
